The bull shark is typically found in all warm watered oceans. However, they can also be found in lakes and rivers, as they can live in fresh AND salt water. In the Atlantic ocean, the bull shark is found from the coast of Massachusetts to southern Brazilian coasts, and also from Morocco to Angola coastlines. They are also primarily found in the Indian ocean, from South Africa, to Kenya and India, and from Vietnam to Australia.
Large populations of bull sharks can also be found the Zambezi river. All in all, they seem to be able to live just about anywhere that there is a deep body water with plenty of fish for them to consume. One of the main locations where they have been spotted is along the Mississippi River in the United States.
Bull sharks are one of the rare oceanspecies that can actually live in fresh water. Osmoregulation is the ability of an organism to maintain a constant concentration of water in its body even when its outside environment would normally cause it to lose or gain water. Freshwater and saltwater fish both osmoregulate. In most sharks, this adaptation cannot be changed. If they are put into a freshwater environment, they will absorb too much water relative to their concentration of bodily solvents and lose too much salt to stay alive. In other words, most sharks cannot survive in fresh water because they are not capable of adapting to it.
